How to Prepare for Your Arctic Tour in Tromsø (Northern Lights, Snowshoeing & Midnight Sun)

Planning an Arctic adventure in Tromsø? Whether you're joining a Northern Lights chase, a snowshoe hike, or a midnight sun tour, being properly prepared will make your experience far more enjoyable.

Here’s everything you need to know before your tour.

Dress for the Arctic (Even if You Think You’re Ready)

Weather in Northern Norway can be unpredictable—especially in winter. Temperatures can drop well below freezing, and you may spend time standing still while watching the sky.

We recommend:

  • Warm wool base layers
  • Insulating mid-layers
  • Hat, gloves, and scarf
  • Proper winter shoes

👉 Good to know:
We offer thermal suits (winter overalls) for our guests—but we need to know in advance so we can prepare the right sizes for everyone.

Northern Lights Tours – What to Expect

Northern Lights tours often involve driving to different locations in search of clear skies.

To get the most out of it:

  • Be patient—the lights can appear at any time
  • Dress warmly (you’ll be outside waiting)
  • Bring a camera or smartphone

The experience is about more than just the lights—it’s about the atmosphere, the silence, and the moment when the sky suddenly comes alive.

Snowshoe Hiking – Be Ready to Move

Snowshoeing is a more active experience, so preparation is slightly different.

We recommend:

  • Warm but breathable layers
  • Good winter shoes
  • Gloves that allow movement

You’ll generate heat while walking, but it can still be cold when you stop—so layering is key.

Midnight Sun & Summer Tours

During summer, the sun never sets—but that doesn’t mean it’s warm.

For hikes and evening tours:

  • Wear light but layered clothing
  • Bring a windproof jacket
  • Use good walking shoes

Even though it’s bright, temperatures can drop later in the evening—especially in the mountains.

What to Bring

No matter the tour, these essentials are always a good idea:

  • Phone or camera
  • Extra battery (cold drains power fast)
  • Snacks or water
  • A sense of adventure 😉

Being well-prepared means you can relax and fully enjoy the experience—whether you're watching the Northern Lights, exploring fjords, or hiking under the midnight sun.

👉 Tip: Let us know in advance if you need a thermal suit, and we’ll make sure everything is ready for you.
